Rebirth in Decay

An experimental character and prosthetic project exploring the tension between beauty and deterioration. Inspired by the visual language of organic decay, the piece reimagines mould, decomposition and transformation as something elegant rather than grotesque. The final outcome presents decay as a stage of rebirth, balancing discomfort with refinement through high fashion inspired makeup application and sculptural detailing.

Design Approach

The concept developed from an interest in how natural decay can create unexpected beauty through texture, layering and imperfection. Rather than presenting deterioration as horror, the project focused on romanticising it through shape, symmetry and subtle glamour. Noah explored references from organic growth patterns, ageing surfaces and editorial beauty imagery, combining them into a visual identity that felt both unsettling and visually refined. The intention was to create a piece that challenged perceptions of decay while still feeling elevated and cinematic.

Application Approach

The final makeup application combined approximately seven individually applied flat prosthetic pieces alongside detailed eyelash work and layered texture techniques. Careful blending and surface finishing allowed the prosthetics to merge naturally into the skin, creating a believable transformation while maintaining a polished aesthetic quality. Colour palettes were selected to balance softness with decomposition, helping the final character feel visually rich rather than purely grotesque. The overall application aimed to achieve a high-end editorial finish whilst preserving the conceptual narrative of rebirth through decay.
