Preparing for the Shoot

Preparation Creates Better Creativity

One of the biggest things I have learned from working on shoots is that preparation affects everything. The more organised and prepared you are before arriving on set, the more freedom you have to focus on creativity, problem solving and collaboration during the actual production. Preparation starts long before makeup application. Understanding the brief, researching references, organising products and testing ideas all help reduce stress on the day. Shoots often move quickly, especially within fashion, film and editorial environments, so having a clear plan makes a huge difference. Professionalism is also part of preparation. Being punctual, adaptable and easy to work with is just as important as technical ability when working within creative teams.

10 Tips Before Any Shoot

Read the brief properly before planning your makeup. Create a visual moodboard to align the team creatively. Test products beforehand where possible. Pack more products and tools than you think you need. Keep your kit organised and clean throughout the day. Think about how the makeup will look through photography or lighting. Communicate clearly with photographers, stylists and performers. Stay calm when plans change during production. Take behind the scenes content and document your work professionally. Remember that attitude matters. People rehire artists they enjoy working with. The best shoots happen when preparation and creativity work together.
